In addition to our cash position, we use various financial measures to assist in capital deployment decision-making, including cash provided by operating activities and free cash flow, a non-GAAP measure described in more detail below.
Operating income for the nine months ended September 30, 2018 decreased $50 million, or 13 percent, as compared with the same period in 2017, primarily due to lower sales and a lower operating margin rate.
Operating income for the three months ended September 30, 2018 increased $32 million, or 9 percent, primarily due to higher sales and a higher operating margin rate.
Operating income for the three months ended September 30, 2018 increased $40 million, or 11 percent, primarily due to a higher operating margin rate and higher sales.
